Fibromyalgia results in pain throughout the body and often exhaustion that can last for months. It’s not exactly proven what causes fibromyalgia and the typical fybromyalgia symptoms are pain in the muscles and joints at the slightest touch.
Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals. Fibromyalgia has been linked to fatigue, sleep problems, headaches, depression and anxiety.
Women are much more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men. Symptoms sometimes begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress. In other cases, symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no single triggering event. Many people who have fibromyalgia also have tension headaches, TMJ disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression.
While there is no cure for fibromyalgia, symptoms can be controlled in various ways. Exercise, relaxation and stress-reduction measures can help.
