Over Active Bladder Solution - Interstim Therapy, Franklin MA

Over Active Bladder

Living with an overactive bladder can be limiting. It’s a constant search for the nearest bathroom, planning events around trips to the bathroom or cutting out favorite outdoor activities. This common condition affects more than 33 million Americans, so if you suffer from over active bladder syndrome (OBS) you are not alone.

Diet changes, kegels and medications are commonly suggested solutions, but if these solutions don’t work, Interstim Therapy is a new technology that works to control the urge of going to the bathroom. Medtronic, developer of the pacemaker, is the creator of this new bladder control solution.

How Interstim Therapy Works

Sacral nerves control the bladder and muscles related to urinary function by taking signals from the brain. If communication is not correct, nerves don’t get the message to the bladder causing it to not function properly. Interstim stimulates the nerves to correct communication and mitigate incontinence, improve urinary retention and minimize urgency-frequency symptoms.

What’s Next?

The best way to find out if InterStim therapy is right for you is to do a 3 to 7 day trial assessment. A trial is a quick minimally invasive procedure during which a thin flexible wire is inserted into the sacral nerve area and attached to a trial stimulator which the patient wears on their waist band.

Even prior to that, you can speak to a volunteer Patient Ambasador-someone who has received InterStim Therapy and has volunteered to speak to other potential patients.

Franklin Pain and Wellness Center works with urogynecologists Dr. Barbara Stricker and Dr. Ralph Philosophe to provide Interstim therapy and bring relief to patients suffering from Overactive Bladder Syndrome.
